Boom Operator · Sound Professional · Author · Educator
I began in theatre and transitioned into movies
I watched what happened behind the camera—the people and artists coming together to create something none of them could create alone. I saw the daily struggles, the intense commitment, and the camaraderie.
And my world kept getting bigger.
I produced. I created content. I moved into mainstream Hollywood. I traveled. I taught. I wrote. I followed my curiosity into new places and unfamiliar territory, never letting fear of the unknown stop me from seeing what my limits might be.
I LEARNED ON THE SET
Over the years, I worked on films large and small, alongside directors, actors, cinematographers, crews and craftspeople who were all working toward the same thing: telling a story.
Production sound gave me a particular vantage point. I was there for the work that happened just outside the frame: the problem-solving, the improvisation, the concentration, and the collaboration that makes a scene possible.
Those are the stories I became interested in telling.
EVENTUALLY THOSE STORIES BECAME BOOKS
Behind the Sound Cart and Beneath the Boom Pole grew out of decades of experience in production sound, and a desire to make the work, the craft, and the people behind it more visible.
Writing led naturally back to teaching
I began sharing what I’d learned with students and working professionals, in classrooms, workshops and film programs around the world.
I teach production sound, boom operating, and the parts of the job no manual covers: how departments communicate, how to read a set, and the human dynamics that can make or break a production. My workshops are built on real situations from real sets, so people leave with practical skills and a clearer sense of why the work is done the way it is.
EXPLORE TEACHING
YOU’VE PROBABLY HEARD MY WORK. YOU’VE NEVER SEEN IT.
Production sound is literally invisible. When it’s done well, no one notices, yet it shapes everything you feel while watching a film.
And sound is only one craft among dozens. Movies don’t make themselves. Every finished film carries the skill, judgment and problem-solving of people most audiences never know were there.
Once you see that hidden world, you never watch a movie the same way again.
40+ YEARS
Just outside the frame in film and television, beginning as a boom operator in Hollywood, when very few women worked in the craft.
90+ MOVIES
Studio features and independent films & television (or TV) across five decades, from Spy Kids and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to Killers of the Flower Moon.
THE STORY IS STILL UNFOLDING
Start wherever your curiosity leads. Books, films, teaching and stories are each a different doorway into the same world, the one just beyond the frame. Explore the work below, or reach out if something sparks an idea.
